George Johnston: July 31st

On Monday I dressed in my blue and yellow Ukraine flag colors and biked out
from Chernivtsi to Botosani, Romania-country #17, 108 km. Passed 4,000 km
for the trip and set a new max speed record of 58.4 km/hr coming off
mountain on a road with brand new asphalt near Botosani. Averaged on 11.3 as
many of the Ukrainian roads were terrible. Took a rest day today and plan
to take a short day tomorrow to Targu Frumoase instead of going all the way
to Iasi. Too many long days have been wearing me down a bit.

From Iasi I’ll have a couple of choices. Since I’ve previously biked from
Iasi to Galati, Romania on the Moldovan border, I could take a train there
and still keep the chain linked from Lviv continuing to Odessa, where I’ll
switch to a ship. The other option is to continue from Iasi to Chisinau,
the capital of Moldova and see more of that country, and they speak
Romanian, so it’s easier to communicate.

Weather looks good and I’ll keep taking it day by day.
